Shipping Costs
- For any package that weighs over 13 oz, use the flat rate service at USPS. It's the only way we've found to stem the river of money that flows into The Bottomless Gulf of Shipping. Here's how it works:
Order Priority Mail flat rate boxes and envelopes for free at the usps.com Web site. You can also pick them up at the post office. (Cha ching! No more pricey envelopes and boxes from office supply stores!) You can also pay for the postage at the time of order on the Priority Envelopes. (More Time! No more logging in to print out small groups of postage labels.)
If you haven't purchased the postaged-stamped containers, you can go to the USPS site, use PayPal, or visit the post office to get the flat rate stamp. The rate is $4.60 for a 12.5" by 9.5" envelope and $8.95 for a box that's about 12" by 13" by 3.5". There are also larger boxes available.
Affix the postage and address to your container, fill it, and send away! If you're like us, you saved an average of about $4.00 per package by using flat rage. - For packages weighing less than 13 oz, use First Class Mail. It'll probably cost $2 to $3 plus the cost of packaging.
Packaging
- We still don't know exactly where to find the cheapest and most eco-friendly packaging. We're reusing as much as possible and buying at Winco when necessary.
- We recently learned that the mailman will pick up packages at your doorstep for free! We are psyched about this and plan to use it for both business and personal shipments. You can schedule pickups at the USPS Website . There's no package limit, but each package must weigh less than 100 lbs. Also, you have to schedule before 2:00 am on the day of the pickup.
- Shipping adds a lot to the cost of the supplies we need to make our products. The best method for minimizing the cost impact of shipping supplies appears to be grouping as many items into as few shipments as possible.
