I've heard before that chickens have individual personalities and after getting to know the chicks over the last few days, I can vouch for that!
The smallest black one is everyone's favorite. She's at least a few days younger than the others but she seems to be the smartest. She and the other black one are a little friendlier and more relaxed around humans than the Orpingtons are, leading us to believe that Plymouth Rocks are a more human-friendly breed.
The Orpingtons are a bit more cautious, both with humans and in general. One of them is consistently the leader of the pair. The other one just follows along. If they're put in an open area, they huddle together and kind of circle warily around each other, studying everything around them but not taking off to explore. If you do the same with the Plymouth Rocks, they quickly start exploring and pecking around. This morning the little one caught (and ate) a bug!
All four are curious about everything around them. Anything new must be thoroughly eyed, pecked, and climbed upon. If one of the chicks finds something of interest, all of the others immediately tune in and come over to check it out.
It's a wonder any of us is accomplishing anything with this theater-in-a-box showing 24 hours a day!
